Courtship and Dating

Written by loveguide.me

Courtship is the process by which someone chooses a romantic or sexual  partner. During courtship, one may choose a partner for a short-term relationship or for a longer relationship, such as a marriage.

In some cultures, particularly more traditional ones, courtship can have many strict rules that are known and followed by all.  In cultures where arranged marriage is the norm, and parents choose the spouses of their children, here is very little, or no courtship. Sometimes, the parents will give the child a choice of potential spouses; the child can then date them to see which one they like best.

Courting in modern western cultures is known as "dating". Two people go on a "date" in order to socialize and learn about each other, so that they can decide if they should have a longer, more intimate relatinonship.

The term "date" can also mean an occasion when any two people who are romantically involved formally socialize with one another; thus a couple who have already been in a relationship for a long time can also be said to go on dates. A married couple with children may arrange a private date between the two of them just to get a break from their everyday chores.

A couple that often goes on dates may be said to be "dating". Sometimes other terms are used to clarify how committed the couple are to one another and if they are monogamous or not. In the twentieth century, terms like "going out", "going steady" or "seeing each other" were used.
