Courtship in Russia

Written by loveguide.me

A very old-fashioned courtship ritual in old Russia involved the couple themselves not being involved at all! It was the parents of the man and the parents of the woman who would meet and negotiate to settle matters of the marriage of their son and daughter. These two, on the other hand, hardly see each other before their wedding.

Fortunately now in modern Russia, things are not as dependent on the parents as they were in Medieval Europe. Although courtship rituals have evolved, they still remain traditional, conservative, heartfelt and meaningful.

While life in Russia is known to toughen up people, it also makes them appreciate the more important things in life. Men and women are brought up with a traditional upbringing that teaches them to prioritize love and commitment in dating and in their relationships. They stick with the promises and vows that they have made in their much valued relationships. They are a modern people who still have good moral values, classic social graces, and carry themselves with dignity and respect.

Dating in Russia does not differ much from western countries, but there are some things that are uniquely Russian. If at first Russians seem unapproachable, don't be discouraged - it is simply not considered polite in their culture to look at, smile at, or acknowledge strangers. Just simply get to know a Russian by courteously introducing yourself and letting them introduce themselves. They would open up to you, slowly but eventually. Show them that you are confident, interesting, and have a good sense of humor as Russians love and value these qualities in a person.

Russians are also not so big on public displays of affection and would only put up with it if it is discrete. However, when Russians are interacting with their close friends, they converse very closely with each other and often touch each other during the conversation.

Dates are best kept simple at first and can be as simple as taking a walk as Russians love taking long walks everywhere. Their weather, especially after winter during spring time, is very conducive for walking. While on dates, it is customary for the man to pay for everything, including food, drinks, tickets, taxi rides and et cetera. Small gifts are acceptable and in giving a Russian woman flowers, make sure that the bouquet holds an odd number of flowers. Russians have this superstition that an even number of flowers brings bad luck. Alcohol is also a big part of the Russian culture so don't be surprised if drinking is often part of their social activities. Russians are also known for their very fashionable wardrobe and looking good is important to them.

Always remember the important Russian holidays that can be crucial to dating. New Year's and Christmas (which is on January 7 in Orthodox countries) are popular holidays, but Women's day (March 8) is also a very important day in Russia. It is a day to show your lady how much she means to you and how important she is to you. A traditional Russian woman would appreciate flowers, gifts, dining out, and simple acts that show that she is well-loved.
