Are You Being Deceived?

Online dating has become extremely popular. With the advent of online dating, it seems as though finding someone to love and to marry has become easier than it ever was before.

One of the benefits of online dating is anonymity. When you go on an online dating website, you can avoid letting other people know your personal details until you are ready to reveal them. This can make you feel more comfortable conversing with them.

Unfortunately, some people who use online dating services use the cover of anonymity to deceive other members. Here are some questions to ask yourself if you want to find out if your potential date is lying to you:

  1. Do they avoid providing information about themselves at all? Many people will want to avoid giving out identify information, such as their last names or their addresses, but someone who refuses to talk about their hobbies or what TV programs they like to watch could be hiding something
  2. When telling stories, do they avoid details? When you probe for more information, do they change the subject?
  3. Are their discrepancies in their stories? Try to remember details of stories that they tell you from one conversation to the next. Are they ever inconsistent?
  4. Do they continue to hide information about themselves, even after you have been talking online for a while, and you have begun to revealing more personal details about yourself? Do they refuse to send a photo, or speak to you via a phone or webcam, even after you have been talking online for months?

These tips should help you avoid being duped by a dishonest person. However, the most important tool that you have is your intuition. If you feel that the other person is lying or is hiding something from you, pay attention to that feeling. You are better off forgetting about them and trying to meet someone else.
